Have you ever said to someone, “You made me angry”? Is that a true statement? Can someone make you angry? We might, of course, have a legitimate right to be angry—if someone has betrayed us, for example. But in fact, anger is a result of the meaning we give to a stimulus. As figure one illustrates, the stimulus must pass through the filter of our belief system, which is what makes up the content of our mind. Our response happens so rapidly we don’t even see the process; we’re not aware of the filter through which the stimulus has passed to create the response. But our emotional responses really are a byproduct of a thought that has gone through the filter of our minds. Therefore, to say, “You made me angry,” is generally not a factual statement. Ultimately, our goal is to have a mind—a filter or belief system—that actually produces the fruit of the spirit. More about that in a moment.
